We support our students with individually tailored and academically rigorous curricula and push them to succeed at the highest levels by providing them with the resources and mentoring that they need to reach their full potential. 

 

Why Our Work is Important

Students across America are dropping out of high school at an alarming rate. Dropping out of high school has a substantial impact on a young person’s life. Over the course of their lifetime, an individual who drops out of high school is more likely to have reduced earning power, greater social service dependency, increased rates of criminal involvement, and shorter life expectancy. Phoenix Charter Academies addresses this trend by creating environments where students can demonstrate their talent and resilience and prepare themselves for success through high school, college, and beyond.

The Opportunity

The English Language Development Teacher will teach at one of our Chelsea campus. The English Language Development Teacher will be responsible for planning lessons and curricula, administering assessments, collecting and analyzing data, and relentlessly supporting students to achieve academic excellence. Phoenix teachers do more than simply teach academic lessons; they serve integral roles as advisers and mentors for our scholars. Bilingual candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

 

Your Contribution

In addition to demonstrating the qualities of a Phoenix staff member, the Humanities Teacher will be responsible for the following:

 

Curriculum and Instructional Responsibilities:

• Design and deliver rigorous instructional content including lessons, curriculum supplements, weekly overviews, scope and sequence plans, and performance assessments in alignment with curricular framework
• Support the social-emotional learning connected to college and career readiness, including 1:1 support as needed
• Participate in weekly professional development on Fridays from 1:30– 4:30 PM
• Participate in supervision, weekly coaching cycles, and formal mid-year and end-of-year evaluations in alignment with goals and deliverables set by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction
• Collaborate frequently with Academic Support staff to ensure appropriate supports are in place for all students
• Collect and analyze student academic data and use it to inform instruction and meet student needs 

 Non-curricular Responsibilities:

• Communicate with parents and other adult supporters through phone calls, email correspondence, and/or in-person meetings 
• Provide school support and coverage duties deemed necessary by the Head of School or administrative staff
• Set high standards and goals for scholars; consistently use real data to measure growth towards these goals
• Publicly display evidence of great scholarship in and around your classroom
• Build meaningful and supportive relationships with students to facilitate academic growth and achievement
• Communicate scholar support needs with Director of School Culture and Social Worker whenever necessary
• Gain ESL certification by taking MTEL in ELL instruction after training by ELL Department Chair

 

Qualifications & Competencies

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• At least 1 year of direct scholar-serving (teaching, tutoring, academic support, etc.) experience preferred.
• Bilingual/Spanish-speaking candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
• Communication - Conveys information effectively and efficiently using verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills; has knowledge and flexibility to communicate across lines of difference.
• Scholar Orientation - Works to deepen understanding of scholars and centers the needs of scholars in all aspects of how the work is done.
• Adaptability - Adjusts and strategically aligns work to the school's mission while navigating complex and changing environments internally and externally.
• Employment is based on qualifications for the role as well as a successful background check.
